It wasn’t more than thirty seconds after shaking hands that Hattie was asking me very detailed, specific questions about her motivations, intents and background that made casting her the inevitable choice. Every script has a character that maybe doesn’t receive as much love as it should. Mikayla, Hattie’s character, was this character. Ripe for growth and ready for fulfillment. At the first read, I knew it would work. Hattie took on Mikayla unlike any other reader we’d had in that place - she didn’t let the fact that Mikayla was a woman affect the strength, power or dominance of her character. She embraced Mikayla and took her down a route we hadn’t heard any actress take her down. The choice was made.
