Parallax
Kind words on
working with Hattie
In the making of Parallax
Hattie is another strange example of casting in Parallax and how small the world of filmmaking can be sometimes… despite the fact that they’d never worked together before, Hattie and Michael have worked a multitude of projects with, Associate Producer, Max Landwirth before. Edging on fringe circles with each other, Michael and Brooke had reached an impasse while casting - they couldn’t find someone who had the look of ‘Mikayla’. Whether it was meant to be or just coincidence, Hattie was the first actor that Max had suggested and recommended to Michael and Brooke. When the two producers reached out to Hattie with an already fleshed out and mostly locked production schedule, Hattie was not only able to blow Michael and Brooke away in an audition-based-read (with all the already cast actors including Nelson, Naomi, Bette and more), but was then somehow available every single day production needed her and unavailable the rest.
Like a match made in heaven, Hattie was offered the part and she immediately clicked with the atmospheres of the rest of the team. “What I immediately loved about Hattie was her attention to detail. It wasn’t more than thirty seconds after shaking hands that Hattie was asking me very detailed, specific questions about her motivations, intents and background that made casting her the inevitable choice. Every script has a character that maybe doesn’t receive as much love as it should. Mikayla, Hattie’s character, was this character. Ripe for growth and ready for fulfillment. At the first read, I knew it would work. Hattie took on Mikayla unlike any other reader we’d had in that place - she didn’t let the fact that Mikayla was a woman affect the strength, power or dominance of her character. She embraced Mikayla and took her down a route we hadn’t heard any actress take her down. The choice was made. Hattie powered through the production on some rough days with us… gear being stolen, roasting in 106F desert heat… the list goes on… but it doesn’t take away from the fact that Hattie became a part of our little film family.” - Michael (Writer/Director/Producer)

"Lead Smith takes the storyline by the reins, she’s a powerful rational woman who navigates through Cinder Park’s madness keeping her mind and top intact. Smith doesn’t make McKenzie a wide-eyed naif, but an able-minded survivor."
